 Calve Sankara Chettiar was a wealthy and prominent businessman and honorary magistrate in Pondicherry, known for sheltering Sri Aurobindo when he first arrived in 1910. He also supported the poet Subramania Bharati. His house at 39 Camoutty Street was a crucial first residence for Sri Aurobindo and his companions.  A wealthy and influential businessman: Sankara Chettiar was one of Pondicherry's richest and most prominent citizens and served as an honorary magistrate. Sheltered Sri Aurobindo: From April 1910, Sri Aurobindo and his companions used the upper rooms of Chettiar's house as their first base in Pondicherry. Provided sanctuary: The location was kept secret initially, providing a safe refuge for Sri Aurobindo from British authorities. Chettiar covered all their expenses during this time.
